Zhao Liying has grown into such a versatile actress with a plethora of solid dramas under her belt, but she’ll always have a special place in my heart as the spritely Su Huan’er in The Lovebirds 错点鸳鸯/戏点鸳鸯. With a low-budget and almost no big names at the time, The Lovebirds is like a good web-production before they were a thing. The set is bare and the costumes are cheap, but the cast is adorable and the interactions are cute X 1000.
The two-part drama series is split into the two parts, each very loosely adapted from a separate book by Xi Juan (Wrong Carriage, Right Groom). The first half originally told of a timetraveller who accidentally becomes the newly-wed wife of a warlord of the Shi family while the second tells of a crossdressing inspector who seeks refuge under the Shi family while seeking revenge for her father.
The Lovebirds is available with English subs here.

I don’t think this was in the book, so taking bets now on if Song Yunhui wrote anything on that paper airplane.
I didn’t think it would be possible to cast people more like a character than the book portrayals, but here we are with Like a Flowing River 大江大河. Wang Kai, Zhou Fang, Yang Shuo and Dong Zijuan actually have the perfect qualities to fill out what I think are inconsistencies in the characters in the books (Tong Yao’s character is already perfect).
My only concern is Jin Chen. Imo she’s the actress who has the most on-screen chemistry with Wang Kai, but her character was so unrealistically perfect and unlikeable that she would need a major overhaul to work. I will likely be rooting for Zhou Fang’s character.
Actress Zhou Fang ( Lovebirds 戏点鸳鸯 aka one of the cutest cdramas of all times) recently got married to director Liu Chang (With You 最好的我们), and their love story is as cute as any idol drama. The two went to pre-school together, dated once in middle school, once in high school, and then one last time in college that resulted in marriage. Here’s her story loosely translated.
Yes, I married the boy who’s been in my life for 24 years.
I met Liu Chang in middle school.
Scrawny, around my height.
Every afternoon, we took the k54 bus home.
Before he got off at his stop every day, we would exchange a letter that we wrote each other.
We’ve kept every one of those letters to this day.
The ER may seem hectic and stressful, but it sure feels a lot better when your patients include Sun Honglei, Qiao Zhenyu, Chen He, Wen Zhang, Huo Siyan, Ma Su, Yao Di, etc. Director Zhao Baogang‘s latest production, Young Doctors 青年医生, focus on four young doctors and their younger residents in the ER – Ren Zhong, Zhang Li, Zhang Duo, Wang Yang, Du Jiang, Zhang Jianing, Zhou Fang. The series has released several sets of cute posters for the various leads.
Fair warning: the photoshoots are a lot better than the series itself, but that may just be because I’ve only been skipping to Zhang Ze/Zhou Fang parts.
- Trailer for Tang Yan, Yang Rong, Hawick Lau’s The Lady & the Liar here.
- Zhao Liying, Hawick Lau’s Secret of the wife to air on Hunan TV in March.
- Following the Ancient Sword, Huanrui receives approval for another fantasy wuxia series, Kunlun 昆仑, based on the book of the same name.
- Zhao Liying, Han Dong, and Zhou Fang’s Lovebirds series 错点鸳鸯·戏点鸳鸯 finally to air on satellite on the 20th. While part 1 is a bit all over the place, I’m a big fan of part 2’s Han Dong – Zhou Fang pairing. After watching part 2 at least three times, I’m so excited for a HD version!
