18 years after Huan Zhu Ge Ge (还珠格格) won over the hearts of viewers across China, leading actress Zhao Wei will return to the story that catapulted her to fame. Alibaba Pictures recently announced that it will release an animated film adaptation of Huan Zhu Ge Ge, with Zhao Wei taking on the role of director.
In recent years, many popular dramas have been adapted for the silver screen, causing fans to wonder if Huan Zhu Ge Ge would earn similar treatment. In 2014, news reports claimed that Alibaba Pictures had purchased the rights to adapt the novel into a film. Because of Zhao Wei’s close ties with Alibaba founder Jack Ma, it was strongly believed that she would support the project by participating in the movie in some way.
However, in the two years since, there has been little to no news regarding the rumored animated film — until now. Yesterday, Alibaba CEO Zhang Qiang unexpectedly announced that preparations for the movie would begin this year, and that the company planned to present the story as an animated film.
Ten of China’s leading ladies graced Vogue, and each of them individually posed for 2 – 3 pictures (included inside the shoot). This makes for some thirty photos total, featuring actresses Zhao Wei, Carina Lau, Fan Bingbing, Tang Wei, Li Bingbing, Zhang Ziyi, Zhou Xun, models Liu Wen and Du Juan, and singer Li Yuchun. Zhao Wei’s outfit in this photo shoot makes me think of the granny from Twenty Again. She’s co-starring with Xu Zheng in the upcoming film Lost in Hong Kong (which is also being directed by Xu Zheng). In this story, Xu Zheng’s character once dreamed of being an artist, but is now a middle-aged petty merchant. He and his wife go to Hong Kong to vacation – although Xu Zheng’s real motive is to meet up with his college love. Unfortunately, his wife’s little sister (Zhao Wei) senses his hidden intentions, and refuses to let him go… Continue reading
Zhao Wei is gorgeous in this forest-themed photoshoot by Chen Man. Continue reading
Yang Mi seems geared up for summer in her new photoshoot for Elle, but mostly, she seems ready to exercise. Zhang Xinyu, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to want to get out of bed. Zhao Wei and Xu Lu show off crisp blue backgrounds (though for separate photo shoots), and meanwhile, Liu Yuxin dresses in pastels and red lipstick. My personal favorite from this round up, though, would have to be Lu Yi’s stroll in the rain. Look below the cut for more pictures! Continue reading
Zhao Wei sings the theme song for Alec Su‘s directorial debut The Left Ear starring Ou Hao, Chen Duling, Yang Yang, and Ma Sichun. The cast looks much better in character than expected.
My Old Classmate and But Always are both recent films following the nostalgic trend after the success of So Young and American Dreams in China, but did they succeed, or were they mere capitalistic ventures to ride on the commercial success of their predecessors? Warning: There might be spoilers.
