Promo Round-up: Martial Universe

Martial Universe 武动乾坤 follows Lin Dong’s (Yang Yang) journey as he levels up to become the most powerful fighter in the land, and protects the world from an attack by the demons. Zhang Tian’ai and Wang Likun play his love interests. It’s also acclaimed historical drama director Zhang Li’s (Ming Dynasty 1566) first attempt at a fantasy drama, so I’m curious to see the outcome.

The 40 episode drama has been split into two parts, and will air in the 10pm time slot from Tuesday to Thursday on Dragon TV beginning tonight. Watch on Youtube here.

Another Novoland drama in the works

Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy hasn’t secured an air date yet, though that’s not stopping its production company Novoland from preparing another series set in the same fantasy world. The new drama is titled Wings of Wind 羽传说, and will be helmed by director Zhang Li (currently filming Martial Universe).

The original novel is written by Jin Hezai (Tribes and Empires, Wukong) and depicts the rise and fall of the winged tribe. The royal Feng and Yi families from the previous dynasties overthrew the current monarch, and the Yi family proclaimed themselves the new rulers. The first thing they did was segregate the winged tribe, bringing chaos to the land. As war with the mortals loomed, Feng Lingxue and Xiang Yichi are forced to choose between their love and the fate of the tribe.

Will this drama be able to redefine the Chinese fantasy genre?

Zhang Tian’ai (Go Princess Go) and Jin Chen (The Imperial Doctress) are set to star as the female leads in fantasy-cultivation drama Martial Universe 武动乾坤, which had earlier confirmed rising actor Yang Yang (Just One Smile Is Very Alluring/Love O2O) as the male lead.

“Young Doctors” fixes up top celebs

Clearly the type of people you would trust with your life in the ER.

Clearly the type of people you would trust with your life in the ER.

The ER may seem hectic and stressful, but it sure feels a lot better when your patients include Sun Honglei, Qiao Zhenyu, Chen He, Wen Zhang, Huo Siyan, Ma Su, Yao Di, etc.   Director Zhao Baogang‘s latest production, Young Doctors 青年医生, focus on four young doctors and their younger residents in the ER –   Ren Zhong, Zhang Li, Zhang Duo, Wang Yang,  Du Jiang, Zhang Jianing,  Zhou Fang.  The series has released several sets of cute posters for the various leads.

Fair warning: the photoshoots are a lot better than the series itself, but that may just be because I’ve only been skipping to Zhang Ze/Zhou Fang parts.

The Forty Nine Day Memorial mourns for Nanking

p2212422955

“Those who hope for hope—after an eternity—are entitled to do so only if they have measured that which has the power to obscure hope… But we must not make
that journey too quickly. We must linger with this staring point and not rush on too soon, seeking relief from its horror. How long must we linger? An eternity, perhaps.” – Robert Brown in the preface to Night.

Based on the same book by Yan Geling as The Flowers of War. The Forty Nine Day Memorial 四十九日·祭  will air in time for first National Mourning Day of the Nanking Massacre.  Featuring the younger Song Jia, Hu Ge, Zhang Jiayi, and Zhang Xinyi (the same girl from the film), the adaptation is scripted by author Yan Geling and will follow more closely to the novel (i.e. without Batman the random white savior).   Director Zhang Li is known for his critical and nuanced treatment of history through masterpieces like  Ming Dynasty 1566 大明王朝1566 and The Road to the Republic 走向共和. Given that I’ve burst into tears every time I’ve seen a trailer, we’ll see if I can last the series.  The series airs on December 1st.

China’s favorite detective timetravels for “New Detective Squad”

What truer love is there than between a sociopath of a detective and his loyal sidekick?

Following Sherlock’s timetravelling to modern day London and New York, China’s favorite detective (sorry, Dee) also chose to get a taste of modernity in “New Detective Squad 新神探联盟.”  Set in an alternate universe Republican era, the Nesound-produced detective series again features the lovely trio of Judge Bao (Zhang Duo), his OCD bickering pal Gongsun Ce (Wang Kai), and their martial arts trained eyecandy sidekick Zhan Zhao (George Hu). Joining them are Kimi Qiao Renliang  and Li Xinru as villains, and Zhang Li as the doctor.

The trailer for the series fais to depict the cuteness of the characters:
