Yu Zheng’s variety show Real Actor is all about improvisation

Screenwriter / Director Yu Zheng and mentors Zhang Jingchu, Francis Ng, Zhang Songwen

The first episode of Real Actor 演技派 is all about the fundamentals of acting, and runs through the auditions and evaluations of 30 up-and-coming actors in just over 2 hours. The scenarios Zhang Songwen gives the actors does a great job of revealing their strengths and weaknesses as they are forced to perform on the spot.

Francis Ng doesn’t mince his words but his honest opinions are definitely a breath of fresh air. Yu Zheng will probably have more to do in future episodes, as the final twelve actors will be competing for roles in his variety show-drama Royal Kitchen in the Qing Dynasty 紫禁城里的小食光.

The actors I’m looking forward to seeing more of: Wang Yuwen, Lamu Yangzi, Fan Jinwei, Wu Jiayi, Zhang Lula

Astronaut Kjell Lindgren announced the award from the International Space Station.

At the Hugo announcements today, The Three Body Problem‘s author Liu Cixin and translator Ken Liu (himself a former Hugo winner for short story)   became the first Asians to win the prestigious Hugo award for Best Novel.  It is also the first translated book to win. This may be their first, but it may not be their last as the second in the trilogy, The Dark Forest  (translated by Joel Martinsen ), was released earlier this month.

Feng Shaofeng, Zhang Jingchu, Tang Yan, Zhang Han confirmed for The Three Body Problem

Would you turn your planet to an alien race to save it?

Sci-fi epic The Three Body Problem has recently announced its cast, including Feng Shaofeng, Zhang Jingchu, Tang Yan, Zhang Han, and Du Chun.   Feng Shaofeng plays a nano-materials scientist uncovering the truth behind the mysterious organization aimed to change the world order;  Zhang Jingchu the younger astrophysicist who first made contact with the alien species Trisolarans and who heads the Earth Trisolaran Organization(ETO) ; Tang Yan and Zhang Han both also play scientists, but of opposite camps.

I know, I’ve said this a gazillion times, but read it! It’s only been about a century since a Chinese sci-fi novel’s been published in English.  Plus, Liu Cixin is involved in like five other sci-fi films right now and you don’t want to miss out on the sci-fi craze.

Words from our great ETO leader, let the universe shine for you:

Photoshoot Friday: Almost bridal

Thank Zhang Jingchu, because her photoshoot with Bazaar Jewelry saves this round-up from being another bridal photoshoot Friday. On the other hand, Kitty Zhang Yuqi is in full bridal style, with flowers and glitter for her bodice; Li Xiaoran‘s shoot brims with flowers. Meanwhile, Jing Tian‘s vermillion lipstick is a nice contrast to the lush countryside her photo shoot took place in, while model Zhang Xinyuan‘s photoshoot is by the ocean and utterly gorgeous (though you really can’t see any of her face). Look below the cut for more pictures. (more…)

Zhang Jingchu for Marie Claire

Actress Zhang Jingchu looks like she came from a dream land in this photoshoot for Marie Claire. Her upcoming movies in 2014 include A Derailed Time 脱轨时代, where she plays a woman whose married life has slowed, and feelings for a lover create friction; My Running Shadow 我的影子在奔跑 is another movie of hers that features a theme song from Zeng Yike. where she plays a loving single mother. Look below the cut for more pictures!

Photoshoot Friday: Florals

This photo was left out of the set when it was first released (others from that photoshoot can be found here) but I couldn’t pass it up.

LI Xiaolu looks awfully like Tong Liya in one of her stills, but Tong Liya herself makes an appearance too. So does Ni Ni, in pink and framed by an orchid (and, as seen from this cover photo, as beautiful as ever); Liu Yun has flowers hanging to her long veil. Laure Shang Wenjie wears a floral print against plenty of blue light; Qiao Qiao and Zhang Jingchu aren’t actually wearing flowers, but they’ve sneaked in anyways. Michelle Chen  isn’t wearing flowers either, but she carries a bright bouquet near her feet.  (more…)

Photoshoot Friday: Happy New Years

What’s black, white, and red all over? (…This photoshoot round up!)

Jiang Xin looks elegant with her black lace and black tops; Wang Likun is dressed in a bold red in every picture. Gao Yuanyuan looks surprisingly tropical with her flowered jacket, while Sun Li follows the black-white-red theme the most perfectly. Kitty Zhang Yuqi would have vied with her for the title, but she wears an orange bandana in one of the stills. And finally, to celebrate the latest season of Sherlock, comes model Shocklock Zhang Liang in a  stunning red… dress?  Who wears red lipstick the best?  (more…)

Photoshoot Friday: Red, Green, and White

Zhang Jingchu is a fairytale princess, vying with Zhao Wei to be the queen of red roses. Ying’er must be Little Red Riding Hood then, with her riding cap and red coat. Meanwile, Jiang Wenli relaxes with breezy greenery and bright red tropical flowers. Ni Ni won’t be left out either, decking out in a red dress; Angelababy adds the feeling of snow with a white dress and a stunning necklace. Red lipstick isn’t enough for Bai Baihe – she also carries red gloves, a watermelon, and a red pepper through the pictures in her shoot.  (more…)

Photoshoot Friday: August 2, 2013

 photo 704_1048373_471859_zpsb26b6a70.jpg

From Zhang Ziyi’s regal black and white, to Wu Xiubo’s brooding and Chen Xiaochun‘s scornful look of distaste, it seems that this weeks round up is centered towards elegance and darkness. Even Zhou Dongyu takes on a more mature persona, replete with red lipstick, and both Zhang Jingchu and LI Bingbing are sleek and sexy in a series of black. Jiang Jinfu tries to smolder while suiting up. Fan Bingbing didn’t seem to receive the message, though – as the exception, she is superhero-cute and has Batman, Spiderman, and Superman on a leash all at once. Watch out for her new movie with Aarif Lee on August 13th!  (more…)
