China’s New Variety Show ‘Real Hero’ To Air July 10th

Which one of those is not a noun?

‘Real Hero 真心英雄,’ China’s newest variety show to air July 10th, is a spin-off off of South Korea’s ‘Infinite Challenge’ and ‘X-Man’, where a team of celebrities are given strenuous physical and mental challenges to complete in a short amount of time. Watching the trailer, it seems that the challenges include diving through a pool of plastic balls, parachuting into the sky, a giant tug of war, hamster ball fighting, wrestling, and lots of good ‘ol variety show style drama.

This season’s team features Chen Xuedong, Joe Cheng,  Zhang Jie, Zhu Yawen, Tong Dawei, and Yang Kun,  with Guo Jingming as a guest star in ep 1. The theme of this show, according to the show creators at Jiangsu TV,  is to show the audience what it takes to be a real hero, and how we can be them in our everyday lives.

There’s only one song I liked this week, and it’s  the previously posted M.I.C.‘s Only One (see what I did there?).   Lorry recommends this Mandopop playlist  for non-mainland Cpop. Anyone else have recommendations?

Zhang Jie won last week’s vote  for the third week in a row with his duet for with Karen Mok for Monk Comes Down the Mountain.

Zhang Jie sings yet another theme song; Tang Yan, Wallace Chung pretty in the sun

If you ever get a jeopardy question “this person sung the theme song for XX drama”, your best bet would be “Who is Zhang Jie?” After singing the themes for Ancient Sword, Cosmetology High, and Romance of the Condor Heroes, he’s also taken over the theme from My Sunshine starring Tang Yan, Wallace Chung.

Photoshoot Friday: Boys Night Out

If you don’t recognize Zheng Yacheng right now…you might, in the future. The star of this week’s cover photo was in Ancient Sword (one of the servants of the Fang household, I think ), and will also be in Ruby Lin’s Realm of Love, A Legend of Chinese Mortal (仙侠）, and the Legend of Miyue (starring Sun Li). and The Journey of Flower (starring Zhao Liying and Wallace Huo). He doesn’t have any of the major roles there, but hey, Chen Xiao was once just a cameo as Emperor Wu in Schemes of a Beauty…

The others accompanying him in this photoshoot Friday are pretty well established by now: Zhang Jie, for Cosmopolitan; Hu Ge (with a pretty strange pose at one point) , Chen Xiao (dazzling), Chen Kun (should have asked him to sing something for the New ROCH series, join the Chen family…), and Qiao Zhenyu. This Photoshoot Friday is late, but…doesn’t Rhydian Vaughan make up for it? He’s in a shoot with Qi Xi. Also, there’s Zhang Meng and Du Ruoxi rocking the crimson lipstick, and Yang Rong looking adorable in all black. Zhang Xinyi is as stylish as ever, sporting various daring outfits; meanwhile, and Joe Chen is the “cute” type of retro (she has crimson lipstick too, oops). Who are you, mystery Russian lady?

The II Summer Youth Olympic Games kicked off last night in China’s historically on-again, off-again capital of Nanjing with a special effects-laden, two-hour opening ceremony. More fun than Beijing’s 2008 spectacular, Nanjing featured an upbeat pop song, Light Up the Future 点亮未来, sung by superpeople Jane Zhang and Zhang Jie, and foreign guests Kim Soo-hyun and an unknown Russian singer.

Far be it for the organisers to include her name in the program, or for official media sources to refer to her as something other than “a female Russian singer.” Chinese sources give her name as 噶丽娅, transliterated as Galiya. Ah, of course! The famed Russian pop princess, Galiya!

Except nobody seems to know who she is.

Popular South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun received the biggest applause of the four performers, while the blonde Russian songstress went virtually unnoticed. This is unusual, because Chinese audiences usually love white people singing in Chinese. Continue reading →

Ancient Sword releases opening, ending by Zhang Jie, Yu Kewei

The OCD in me wishes they were arranged by the colors of the rainbow.

Crazy cast Legend of the Ancient Sword released its  opening theme, Heart of the Sword 剑心, by Zhang Jie, and the ending theme, Faraway远方, by Yu Kewei.

The series has a ridiculously gorgeous cast of Li Yifeng, Yang Mi,  Zheng Shuang, Qiao Zhenyu, Ma Tianyu, Gillian Chung, William Chan, Chen Zihan, Dilireba, Li Xiaolu, Zhang Meng, and Qi Wei, and will begin airing next Wednesday.

Finalists from both seasons of I Am A Singer return to the stage to duel it out, with a surprise twist.

Have I just not been paying attention all this time, or are those sponsored beverages a lot more prominent in this episode? I don’t even know what they are. But I want to drink them.

This special episode pit the finalists of the first I Am A Singer 我是歌手 season against the recently concluded second season finalists. Season one finalist Huang Qishan, who appeared in last week’s finale, was absent in this episode and was instead replaced by Laure Shang. (Oh, I’m sure she had a very good reason for not being there.)
Just to note, some performances have not been uploaded onto HunanTV’s official YouTube channel. We’ll try and work our way around that.

The format differed slightly from previous I Am A Singer episodes. Instead of the usual free-for-all sing-off, season one and season two singers were paired together and went head-to-head in solo rounds. Some match ups were good. Some could have been better.
