National Day Film Round-Up

Abominable is the first animated film available with Chinese dubs across all theaters in the U.S.

The themes of this National Day week-long break are unsurprisingly patriotism and surprisingly Mount Everest. Here’s the slate of films trying to beat Ne Zha and The Wandering Earth‘s record-breaking numbers this year. All four are available in limited theaters in the U.S. and Canada (and probably New Zealand and Australia).

Abominable, the love letter to Chinese scenery that’s the first film from Pearl Studio, a venture between DreamWorks Animation, China Media Capital, and the Shanghai Media Group. I’ve seen it in English and definitely recommend it. The main characters are very shippable in an Asian drama way, and the imagery is super imaginative.

Note that if you’re in the U.S., you can watch the film with Chinese dubs in theaters by using the Theater Ears app.
Voice actors: Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai, Tenzing Norgay Trainor in English; Zhang Zifeng, Arthur Chen Feiyu, Wan Qian, Cai Qin in Chinese

Liu Yifei, Jing Boran’s upcoming romance drama gets official title, releases trailer

The trailer for supernatural Republican romance drama The Love of Hypnosis (previously Records of Nanyan Studio) features Liu Yifei as a mysterious perfume shop owner with a split personality. There’s the normal Lu Mansheng, and then there’s the second persona Ye Moluo, who seems to gain the upper hand in the latter half of the series, and has a love-hate relationship with male lead Ye Shen (Jing Boran).

Did anyone count how many kiss scenes they had?

Chong Er’s Preach starts filming

Despite the generic-looking costumes and funny-sounding name, this story actually does have some historical relevance

Chong Er’s Preach 重耳传 has started filming.  Starring Wang LonghuaZhang HanyunHan ChaeyoungPurba Rgyal, and Zhang Yishan, I still wish for a drama that would better emulate the dress code for the era based on what we know already, although I understand it is hard since the farther you go back, the less evidence there is to work with.

More character posters and (WARNING!) spoilers at the bottom of the post.
