My Own Swordsman director to film Gu Long comedy wuxia

Who says heroes must be lonely?
Our heroes are happy.

So opens Gu Long’s favorite novel of his, Happy Heroes 欢乐英雄.  The first TV adaptation of novel, titled Growing Pains of Swordsmen, has begun filming and will star Bai Ke, Lan Yingying, Sun Yizhou, and Yang Le as a quartet of happy heroes in their various escapades. The series is directed Shang Jing and “written by” of My Own Swordsman, so I expect it might be similar in tone. The original listed writer was Ning Caishen of  My Own Swordsman but has been changed to Shang Jing after Ning Caishen got banned for doing drugs, but I suspect the script may still be based off his script. The two’s tone should work well with the novel, which is  episodic and an attempt by Gu Long to focus on the more human and mundane stories of the wuxia world.

Once Given, Never Forgotten trailer

Let’s just take a second to appreciate a rare well-translated title. The title refers to her taking on his last name after she loses her memory.

Former child actress Zhang Xueying stars in her first major production in Once Given, Never Forgotten你的名字我的姓氏, and she looks amazing.

The teaser is a little misleading, but FYI  the male lead (Yang Le) did not adopt her because that would be creepy.  Instead, the female lead was adopted by the male lead’s deceased girlfriend’s family after she received her cornea transplant.

The series is mostly a typical love triangle + car crash+ memory loss plot, but it looks cute.  Plus, it’s written and produced  Yao Yao, who actually did a great job with her previous work 漂洋过海来看你.

So Young airs after 6 months, 8 cities filming marathon

The costumes are lovely, the actors are cute, and the on-location sets are beautiful for this youthful summer treat.

The longest-filmed modern idol drama I’ve heard of, So Young 致青春 shot in three locations in Italy (Milan, Florence, and Lucca) and five in China (Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing, Wuyuan) over a period of six months.   The adaptation also features on-site recording, another bonus.    Starring Chen Yao, Yang Le, Zhang Danfeng, Ma Ke, and Cai Jingwen,  So Young is set to air July 11th, and I’m definitely looking forward to it!
