A belated review for one of my favorite dramas of the past year, My Best Friend’s Story 流金岁月. The series by director Shen Yan is a rare Chinese modern series that romanticizes women and the relationship between them with an almost wuxia-like camaraderie. The women are imperfect. They can be greedy and worldly, idealistic and naive, ambitious and ruthless, old-fashioned and spoiled, but they’re also humans who grow and change and who are there for each other. They can be in-laws, sisters, friends, love rivals, or business rivals, but they rarely have innate jealousy for other women. Instead, unspoken loyalty (义气) is prevalent throughout most of the female and some male characters. Combined with gorgeous outfits and some enlightened casting choices, the drama is definitely one of my recent favorites.
Liu Shishi and Ni Ni star as Jiang Nansun and Zhu Suosuo, two best friends who seem to be polar opposites but are bound by their loyalty and willingness to give everything to people they love. While Jiang Nansun’s plotline is better written in both character development for its star and her relationships, Zhu Suosuo’s line succeeds with its plethora of excellent actors who added so much complexity to their characters. .
My Heroic Husband features Zhang Ruoyun as a calculating businessman who is reborn in ancient times as the titular husband Ning Yi (Guo Qilin). He marries Su Tan’er (Song Yi), daugher of a rich merchant, and together, they build a business empire. Jiang Yiyi, Gao Shuguang costar, while Zhu Zhu and Tian Yu guest star.
The 36 episode drama releases 2 episodes every Sunday to Tuesday on iQiyi.
My Best Friend’s Story stars Liu Shishi and Ni Ni as friends who support each other through thick and thin. I’m halfway through the other friendship drama Dear Missy, and I think it would be wise to view this as a drama that focuses on each of the female lead’s romances, with a touch of womance sprinkled on top.
The 38 episode drama airs 2 episodes daily on CCTV-8.
Like all awards, the Magnolia Awards have their own favourites, yet it is the awards show I enjoy watching most because the winners are usually worthy recipients. By all accounts, The Thunder winning Best Drama and Best Screenwriter was probably the biggest surprise of the night. A Little Reunion, Joy of Life and The Longest Day in Chang’an also took home two awards each.
Under the Light 坚如磐石 stars Lei Jiayin as Su Jianming, a police officer who walks right into a trap set up by the rich and powerful Li Zhitian (Yu Hewei), and a whole string of unexpected dirty secrets and cover ups are unearthed. Zhang Guoli, Zhou Dongyu, Sun Yizhou, Tian Yu and Joan Chen costar.
Upcoming legal drama The Best Partner stars Jin Dong as a succesful attorney and Lan Yingying as a budding lawyer. The drama’s supporting and guest star lineup features Liu Mintao, Zhu Zhu, Tian Yu, Dai Xu, Sun Chun, Wang Ou, Wu Yue, Vivian Wu,Yuan Quan and Qiao Zhenyu, just to name a few.
The 48 episode drama airs daily on Dragon TV/Beijing TV beginning tonight.
First stills are here for Jin Dong and Lan Yingying’s The Best Partner, a workplace drama that can probably do without a love line between the main leads. Sun Chun, Tian Yu, Liu Mintao, Zhu Zhu, Dai Xu and Vivan Wu costar. Wang Ou and Wu Yue guest star.[Extended Synopsis]
