When I turn back to look at myself,
That light was “me” all along
The lyrics by Wu Tsing-Fong of Sodagreen for Rocket Girls’ third single Light (second from their EP) is heartfelt and shines with his unique combination of childhood wonder and empowerment, and the arrangement of the girls’ voices is stunning Someone said it reminded them of classic SHE songs and that’s how I feel.
Chen Man works her magic once more on the girls of Produce 101 in this punk wuxia qipao photoshoot. Someone needs to make a girlband with this aesthetic because it’s 101% better than the pink Victorian nursery aesthetic of Produce 101.
The Chinese version of Produce 101 创造101, a competition aimed at forming a girl group, began airing last night and this cover of Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s Problem was head and shoulders above every other group.
Kimberley Chen, Lucia Wu, and Mimi Lee are all ethnically Chinese but born and raised in three different countries. Kimberley Chen is Australian, Mimi Lee is Thai, while Lucia Wu was born in Brazil. I don’t know the other two well, but I’m a big fan of Kimberley Chen, and I’m psyched to see her getting more recognition on the mainland.
The other fun group performance last night was Plain Disco from what’s left of girl groups A’N’D and KOGirls. Not sure how I feel about the show yet, but it’s always great to hear more from Kimberley!
