Sixteen Kingdoms – Northern Liang (Experiencing Dynastic Restoration).
For the next two weeks we will be exploring the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This week’s post will focus on clothing from the Sixteen Kingdoms and Northern Dynasties from Experiencing Dynastic Restoration 朝代復原體驗. Some of these states from this period had a diverse background which eventually underwent a period of sinicization.

Late Eastern Han Dynasty Nobility (Clothing and Happiness).
This week we continue on to later in the Eastern Han Dynasty from Clothing and Happiness 裝束與樂舞 and Experiencing Dynastic Restoration 朝代復原體驗. This is the period where Chinese underwear made significant improvements to where people started to feel more comfortable wearing fabrics of lighter weight and color. This style of clothing or some variation of it persisted from the Eastern Han Dynasty and when China started to fraction into separate kingdoms into the Three Kingdoms Period, Jin Dynasty, Sixteen Kingdoms Period, and seems to have still been around in some shape or form in the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
From this point on in the history, you will still see a mix of the different Hanfu styles through history but you will probably see more Ruqun 襦裙 and other styles of Hanfu except Quju 曲裾.

This week, take a look at clothing from the later Eastern Han dynasty from Wenliang Jiade ZiXiaoShu‘s 溫涼家的紫小薯 (Warm and Cool Home’s Purple Yam?!?) weibo. Remember that this general style of dress persisted from the late Eastern Han dynasty through the Three Kingdoms period (Kingdom of Wei) and Jin Dynasty but also seems to have had some influence during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
Just going to make a note here that sometimes, clothing styles persist in different eras and groups go on a limb and do things like be creative or combine elements from different eras (This one being an example with some of the styling and stuff). Therefore, every now and again, some clothes get kind of hard to classify into a time period and we are left to rely on factors like fabric choice, style of the sleeves, make-up, adornments, etc. to guesstimate a time period. That being said, not everything we assign may be completely correct despite how much we try. DX

This week, take a look at clothing from the later Eastern Han dynasty from Ji Xiaoyao‘s 姬小妖 weibo. Remember that this general style of dress persisted from the late Eastern Han dynasty through the Three Kingdoms period (Kingdom of Wei) and Jin Dynasty but also seems to have had some influence during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This will also help people get a general idea of how Hanfu looked around God of War.

This week, take a look at clothing from the later Eastern Han dynasty from Danshi Xiangsi‘s 但使相思 weibo. Remember that this general style of dress persisted from the late Eastern Han dynasty through the Three Kingdoms period (Kingdom of Wei) and Jin Dynasty but also seems to have had some influence during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This will also help people get an idea of the evolution of Hanfu after Princess Jieyou.

This week, we take a look into more clothes pre-dating the Tang dynasty. Pictures this week come from Clothing and Happiness 裝束與樂舞. Each of the pictures will be labeled with the general time period they are attributed to and possibly some more details. I will try to keep them in order. Most of the pictures come from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and the Sui dynasty.
With this post, we make a full circle and end up just behind the Tang dynasty. You may see more of Clothing and Happiness in the future but I find that their styling may not be for everybody and probably not the most… err… in-line with modern tastes. We will be following this post up with more Han dynasty and pre-Han dynasty clothing pictures before we start jumping around in the timeline and exploring other Hanfu groups.
Also, I was able to find a source of more Han dynasty hanfu pictures with *gasp* males from different occupations and walks of life. I’m not sure how long these pictures will last but it seems a couple other hanfu makers have started expanding into this time period a tiny bit so maybe I will be able to get just as many pictures from this era that I have from every other dynasty… like say the popular Tang dynasty… pretty please… *bambi eyes*
