Yu Zheng joins in on the Qing Dynasty drama parade

First it was Gong vs. Bu Bu Jing Xin, then Gong II vs. Legend of Zhen Huan, and now this time it’s Yanxi Gonglue vs. Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. Yu Zheng may have toned down on the bright colours, but his lawsuit with Qiong Yao doesn’t seem to have killed off his bad habits of plagiarism.

The Legend of Xiao Zhuang releases trailer

I get that you are running out of ideas on hairstyles but this is ridiculous.

The Legend of Xiao Zhuang has released a trailer and stills.  Starring Jing Tian, Geng Le, and Nie Yuan, let’s just say say that with the exception of Twilight of the Empire, it’s been a while since the outlook on upcoming Qing dynasty dramas has looked so bleak… and I am tired of overused plot devices… like doomed young love… and unreasonably feuding adults… and unexplained and persistent unconditional love…

… anyhoo, more stills below the cut. Continue reading

The Legend of Xiao Zhuang releases stills

Jing Tian or Yuan Shanshan? You decide!

The story follows the life of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang.  In this rendition, Mongolian princess Da Yu’er desires to spend the rest of her life with her true love Dorgon but through a series of events, ends up married to Hong Taiji.  Watch as she lives through the lives of three successive emperors (her husband, son, and grandson), struggles to balance love and responsibility, and follows through with her destiny in lifting the Qing dynasty from its founding to what many would consider its apex.

The New Water Margin and Journey to the West Series casted

423213379036105079475033

This picture made me laugh. It's okay Yan Kuan. You don't need to bulk up for your role in Water Margin as long as you ditch the facial hair.

Warning: Lots of Fangirling ahead because I couldn’t manage to write this without spazzing.

China’s really hitting the four classics this year. Two Journey to the Wests, two Dream of the Red Chambers, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and now even Water Margin has been pushed into production. But China’s drama industry rose pretty quickly in technique and visuals, so in that regard remakes are almost looked to. And apart from the cheap version of Journey of the West, I love the casts quite a lot so I’m happy. Two pretty Jia Baoyus, a hot Zhu Geliang, a hot Tang Shen, and now a shuai, hot, shuai dai le Yan Qing. Do I sound shallow enough yet? I hope so. The amount of eye-candy’s too great for one girl to handle. Share my enthusiasm!

HQ Stills from The New Three Kingdoms Drama

Despite the economic downturn, it seems that Chinese TV dramas are still plunging ahead with bigger and bigger budgets. Admist a lineup of already opulent productions for 2009 including The Legend of Bruce Lee and Dream of the Red Chamber, a new drama adaptation of the Three Kingdoms has already an estimated 100 million yuan budget (around 14 million USD), the highest budget for any drama ever made in China. Even its fairly famous cast, including Lu Yi, Peter Ho, Chen Hao, Ruby Lin, Victor Huang, and Nie Yuan, and what it must have cost to pay them,  does not seem to have affected the quality of the production.

This seems to be the scene where Zhao Yun (played by Nie Yuan) retrieves the infant A Dou. More below, along with a little information on who is playing what. Click on each for bigger.

Edit: This seems so out of place next to the happy Alan/Wei Chen picture.

Fit Lover a Hit at the Chinese Box Office

20081031953451

Karena Lam: How could I still have been outshined despite having 12x as much screentime as everyone else? It's back to being under appreciated.

This movie (also known as Call for Love 2) raked in more than its predecessor, Call for Love and signaled the first week of the wave of holiday-friendly movies. There were no actual numbers but according to reports, theaters were 80% full, and some were even sold-out. Also according to reporters, it seemed to be doing better than Desires of the Heart. I really wish there were actual numbers because it’d be interesting to see how these two romanace comedies stacked up against the other two new releases, guy-friendly Beast Stalker/Witness and The Underdog Knight. I predict the action flicks win because there are more men in China. :P

Inside sources say that a script for Call for Love 3 is already in the works.

Also, guess which character audiences liked the most in Fit Lover, according to Sina? I’ll give you a hint…it wasn’t Karena…so which one of the twelve guys?

Fit Lover Movie Theme MV

5568446_271499

It looks like Deng Chao is the main lead. Congrats…out of 12 actors, that’s quite an accomplishment. They made the right choice in picking the charismatic Karena Lam as the lead. I’m watching this, and I don’t hate her. Sorry that the audio quality is not so good on the video. It’s actually quite a pretty song. Under the cut.

Not enough actresses to go around in the PRC?

Zhang Junning spending whatever precious few screentime he has in Fit Lover with Karena Lam

Zhang Junning spending whatever precious few minutes he has in Fit Lover with Karena Lam

Those criticizing the one-child rule can look no further than upcoming films in China for support. “Fit Lover” is going to star 12 guys chasing after one girl (a spin-off of the 2007 Lunar-New-Year comedy where 10 women chased after one guy), and the upcoming Superboys musical will have all 13 region winners. It doesn’t matter how bad these films turn out; I will probably watch them more than once. It’s going to be cracktastic.

The cast list of Fit Lover with more pics under the cut, and pics from the press conference of the Superboys musical.
