Republican era bromance drama Winter Begonia, which still has no release date, has released a set of character poster and a video of the shooting session with Huang Shengyi and Huang Xiaoming looking like they’re going out on a hunt together. I just need this drama to air now so I have something to watch.(more…)
Everything is perfect in the trailer for the tragically beautiful drama Winter Begonia 鬓边不是海棠红. Yin Zheng stars as a Peking Opera star in Republican Era China while Huang Xiaoming plays his soulmate in this bromance drama about their love for each other, for a dying art, and for the world around them.
Thanks to my love-hate-relationship with Zhang Yunlei, I finally understood the Republican era craze for Chinese opera stars, so even the fan-cam of this trailer released a while ago made me tear up. Plus, Zhang Yunlei and Yang Jiulang are like the definition of an irl bromance that’s as close you can get to romantic love without actually being one.
Wuxia romance drama The Moon Bright For You 明月曾照江东寒 stars Yu Menglong (New Legend of Madam White Snake) and Xing Fei (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) in the leading roles. Merxat (Please Give Me A Pair of Wings) and Zheng Fanxing (The Untamed) costar.(more…)
Prison break drama Please Give Me a Pair of Wings 请赐我一双翅膀 airs on Tencent today. Starring Ju Jingyi, Aaron Yan, Zhang Yuxi, Han Dong, Merxat, and Wang Yitong, the series airs every Tuesday-Saturdays on Tencent here today (so far not region blocked) . More stills, trailer, and a weird official plot that seems to have nothing to do with the drama here.
Peking opera-themed Republican drama Winter Begonia 鬓边不是海棠红 released its first full set of still today while announcing the full cast. The Yu Zheng-produced series stars Huang Xiaoming, Yin Zheng, Charmaine Sheh , Tan Jianci, Merxat, Ma Su, Bai Bing, Du Chun, Huang Shengyi, Liu Min. Gao Yu’er, Chi Shuai, and Tang Zeng.
Producer Yu Zheng makes his foray in adapating boylove novels with Winter Begonia 鬓边不是海棠红, a Peking opera romance period piece no doubt inspired by Goodbye, My Concubine. Although the series will be written by the author of the original novel, it’s uncertain how shippy the drama will actually be. The series stars Huang Xiaoming, Yin Zheng, Charmaine Sheh , Merxat, and Liu Min.
Set in the 1930’s, the series follows displaced Peking Opera performer Shang Xirui (Yin Zheng) as he moves to Beijing to remake his name. In his quest to make a name for himself and reinvent Peking Opera, he captures the eyes of Cheng Fengtai (Huang Xiaoming), a businessman who becomes enthralled by the world of opera. With the help of Cheng Fengtai, Shang Xirui is able to rebuild his old opera troupe and train a group of new talents. When the Japanese army takes of Beijing in 1937, the two must struggle between preserving the art that they love and the city that they love.
Wow the cast of this Zhaoge 朝歌 has had done well since it started filming – Li Yitong and Legend of the Condor Heroes, Bai Yu in Guardian, Zhang Zhehan and Merxat in Legend of Yunxi, and then the current breakout hit of Wu Jinyan and Xu Kai in The Story of Yanxi Palace.
The Shang dynasty epic stars Wu Jinyan, Zhang Zhehan, Bao Jianfeng, Gillian Chung, Merxat, Xu Kai, Li Yitong, Puff Kuo, Jiang Yiyi, Hai Lu , Bai Yu, Bai Lu, Chen Shu, Liu Min, Lian Lian, Deng Sha, Zhang Jianing, He Hongshan, and Liu Zhiyang.
Given their successes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zhaoge airing soon.
In what looks like Prison Break meets Orange is the New Black, Ju Jingyi, Aaron Yan, Zhang Yuxi, Han Dong, and Merxat star in Republican-era Please Give Me a Pair of Wings 请赐我一双翅膀. There are two versions of the plot, both from very official sources, so I’m not sure which one is real, but one that the Baidu Baike and the trailer seem to suggest the series features the female lead hanging out and eventually teaming up with other prisoners to break out of jail after being accused of murder while her friends try to clear her name from the outside.
Trailer, alternate plot, and lots of stills below
Character posters have been released for Legend of Yun Xi 芸汐传, the upcoming ‘light historical drama’ (nicer way of saying youth idol drama in ancient clothing) starring Ju Jingyi (Xuanyuan Sword Legend: Clouds of Han) as Han Yunxi, a noble lady who likes to dabble with medicine and poison.
How nice is it to actually have a female lead not fixed on romances? Despite a love triangle and the inability to learn, the female lead of Above the Clouds 云巅之上 was surprisingly unwavering in her acting dreams, something rare in recent dramas that makes even the most powerful women motivated solely by love. The series tells of a romance between accidental actress by day and maid by night Jian Xi (Yuan Shanshan), her boss and the least-paparazzi-conscious actor Tang Fei ( Chen Xiao), his rumored girlfriend and her acting rival Ji Qing (Jiang Menjie), and a pop star with terrible hair ( Zhang Zhehan).
