Winter Begonia releases character posters

Me looking at the sky when I learned all the March dramas I wanted aren’t airing yet

Republican era bromance drama Winter Begonia, which still has no release date, has released a set of character poster and a video of the shooting session with Huang Shengyi and Huang Xiaoming looking like they’re going out on a hunt together. I just need this drama to air now so I have something to watch.

Huang Xiaoming, Yin Zheng’s Winter Begonia releases beautiful teaser

“Others like my performance, he understands me as a person”

Everything is perfect in the trailer for the tragically beautiful drama Winter Begonia 鬓边不是海棠红.  Yin Zheng stars as a Peking Opera star in Republican Era China while Huang Xiaoming plays his soulmate in this bromance drama about their love for each other, for a dying art, and for the world around them.

Thanks to my love-hate-relationship with Zhang Yunlei, I finally understood the Republican era craze for Chinese opera stars, so even the fan-cam of this trailer released a while ago made me tear up. Plus, Zhang Yunlei and Yang Jiulang are like the definition of an irl bromance that’s as close you can get to romantic love without actually being one.

Palace intrigue series Legend of the Phoenix 凤弈 begins airing today. The series stars He Hongshan, Xu Zhengxi, and Cao Xiwen. Based on the plot summary, I’m really hoping we’ll see something close to a genuine friendship between He Hongshan and Cao Xiwen like the female leads of The Palace of Yanxi.

Watch the drama on Youtube here. Two episodes will be available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Plot,  stills, trailer 1, trailer 2; more trailers; theme song by Mimi Lee of Rocket Girls below:

Xu Zhengxi’s Legend of Phoenix releases trailer

Xu Zhengxi looks so good in this Chinese watercolor robe.

Period drama Legend of the Phoenix 凤弈 , starring He Hongshan, Cao Xiwen, Xu Zhengxi, , Liu Min, and Cui Peng, has released its first trailer.  The trailer is unfortunately less original than its stunning poster and cool costume designs,  but Xu Zhengxi looks as great as ever.

Xu Zhengxi, He Hongshan’s Legend of the Phoenix releases character posters

The costumes and hair pieces fit their characters so much that this could be a Disney princess movie.

Period drama Legend of the Phoenix 凤弈 , starring He Hongshan, Cao Xiwen, Xu Zhengxi, , Liu Min, and Cui Peng, has released its character posters.   I know they’re super modern, but I actually kind of like the costumes and headpieces in the posters. The headpieces, the Medici collars, and the fabrics are all pretty whimsical and seem to be designed to define their characters. Since it’s set in a fictional time and place, they can get away with the European-Chinese hybrid outfits. Not sure how I feel about the resurgence of the popularity of wearing buildings on your head (based on real artifacts), but it seems to work here.

Set in the fictional Eastern Liang dynasty, circus performer Ye Ningzhi’s (He Hongshan) troupe enters the palace and stages a performance to celebrate the empress dowager’s birthday. The ambitious emperor’s sister, the Grand Princess (Liu Min), decides to cause mischief by framing her for treason, though the heroine is saved by strategist Wei Guang (Xu Zhengxi), and falls in love at first sight with him.

When Ye Ningzhi enters the palace two years later as the empress’ maid, she stands up for her fellow servants, and refuses to sacrifice her conscience in the face of power. Ye Ningzhi also works together with Wei Guang to crush the grand princess’ plan to usurp the throne, and catches the admiration of the Empress (Cao Xiwen) and the eye of the emperor (Cui Peng) in the process.
