R.I.P. Kimi

According to Sina,  28-year-old singer, songwriter, and actor Kimi Qiao Renliang passed away at his home  on September 16, 2016.  Homicide has been ruled out.

Qiao was first loved by fans and many of us at Cfensi as a contestant on My Hero in 2007, and soon began his music career.  He also had a successful acting career, being featured in the films such as the critically acclaimed 11 Flowers  and in popular dramas such as Legend of Lu Zhen, New Detective Squad, Cruel Romance, and SOP Queen.

Update: His company has released a statement confirming the cause of death was due to suicide following many years of battling depression.

So Young 2: Never Gone 致青春：原来你还在这里 is a romance film based on the novel of the same name by Xin Yiwu (辛夷坞). The film stars Liu Yifei as the struggling student Su Yunjin and Kris Wu Yifan as the high school genius Cheng Zheng who takes a liking to her.

Stay With Me releases dubbed sneak-peak

How can we be together if you’re dubbed by someone else?

Not enough of Wang Kai in Ode to Joy?  We’re less than two months away from his upcoming series, Stay With Me! The series managed to steal the coveted Hunan TV summer slot, and before the Olympics, too, so at least we know the guys at Hunan TV like it.   Here’s a sneak-peak of the show from Mango TV, although it’s not an official trailer.  Also, don’t worry,  Wang Kai is using his own voice for the actual series, although co-stars Joe Chen and Qiao Renliang won’t.

Spring is coming, it’s the perfect time to fall in love with this new set of much chirpier photoshoot from Stay With Me. This set of posters actually has nothing to do with Easter other than the pastels, but happy Easter to those of you who celebrate it!

Btw, the script is confirmed to be by Xu Ziyuan (WuXin: Monster Killer, yay!)  and Qian Jingjing (Destined to Love You and Cage of Love, urgh) .

Also, the cast will be filming in Paris next week.They’re looking for a male to read Oscar Wilde, some extras of Chinese origin, and Caucasian male thugs if you’re interested.

Posters of Zhao Liying and Kimi Qiao Renliang released for Our Ten Years

Remember this photoshoot, where Zhao Liying sported the short bob and Kimi Qiao taunted Chen Xiao? The two will be starring in the upcoming movie Days of Our Own 我们的十年. The movie is supposed to tell of the best ten years of a person’s life – you have the “poser” played by Zhao Liying and the “engineer boy” (or rather, STEM major) played by Kimi Qiao Renliang, together with the “piano goddess” (Wu Yingjie) and a “career man” (Van Fan). A toast to another youth story!

The film will be released on September 2. A short trailer, and more stills underneath the cut.

Huang Xiaoming’s “Cruel Romance” to Air March 3

Is it really that romantic to lay your head on your significant other’s shoulder? At least Huang Xiaoming isn’t playing piano like Hawick Lau was whenever Tang Yan did that to him in Lady & Liar.

The Republican-era romantic drama Cruel Romance (锦绣缘华丽冒险), starring Huang Xiaoming and Chen Qiao’en, has finally gotten an air date. The series will be broadcast on Hunan TV starting March 3, after The Legend of Fragrance finishes its run.

Based on the novel The Fate of Jinxiu (锦绣缘), Cruel Romance has been highly anticipated by fans of Huang Xiaoming and Chen Qiao’en, who had a brief collaboration in the movie Breaking the Waves (激浪青春). The drama is helmed by Taiwanese director Lin Helong, who is mostly known for Taiwanese idol dramas like Devil Beside You, Wish to See You Again, and Love or Bread.

Cruel Romance recently released its opening theme song, simply titled “Fate” (缘), which is sung by Huang Xiaoming. I usually like his songs because he tends to get good songwriters, but he’s definitely straining his voice in this one. *sigh* The lyrics were penned by the drama’s producers, Huan Yue and Huang Bin (who is also Xiaoming’s manager).

Directed by Joe Ma Wai-ho, Our Ten Years 我们的十年 is the latest youth film, this time starring Zhao Liying, Kimi Qiao Renliang, and Gui Gui.

I still think it’s weird we’re getting all these older, non-mainland directors trying to make films about mainland students in the 1980’s when the selling point of those films is memories, which those directors clearly do not share with the audience. On the other hand, Zhao Liying looks great with a bob!

Weibo Wednesday: March 5, 2014

Before we step into this week’s shenanigans, please consider holding a moment of silence for the victims of the March 1st Kunming attack, which left 29 civilians dead and 143 others injured.

I haven’t been able to find much information about providing aid, short of flying to Kunming and volunteering at hospitals there, which are still treating victims. For those of us who can’t do anything tangible for the situation, let’s follow Yuan Hong‘s advice:

Friends in Kunming, how are you doing? Those thugs are still at large, a reminder to everyone to be alert. May the wounded be safe and the decease rest in peace. As for us, try your best to remain rational and calm. Any negative or hostile moods from us are exactly what they, the ones who caused this massacre, wanted to achieve. The scars of hate carved by the devil brandishing a knife — only love can heal.

Fortunately, there is lots of love for this week’s round-up, starting with writer-racecar driver-director Han Han and his daughter.
