iQiyi Light On returns with a new line up of mystery dramas

iQiyi has recently released a teaser featuring its upcoming mystery thrillers:

  • Gold Panning – Liao Fan, Chen Feiyu.
  • Who Is The Murderer – Xiao Yang, Dong Zijian, Zhao Liying
  • Wisher – Feng Shaofeng, Wenqi
  • The PavilionDuan Yihong, Hao Lei, Zu Feng, Wu Yue, Bai Yufan. Nineteen years ago, the Xuan family’s youngest sister is murdered, and the family is splintered. Almost two decades later, the broken family reunites after the oldest brother becomes the suspect of a fresh murder.

Last year’s Light On program gave us two critically successful dramas in The Bad Kids and The Long Night – any guesses as to which dramas will stand out from the pack this year? (My pick is The Pavilion, based on cast performance alone)

Promo round-up: Upcoming iQiyi dramas

Luoyang – Huang Xuan, Wang Yibo, Song Qian, Song Yi

iQiyi has released a handful of trailers and posters for its upcoming dramas. The successful Light On programme is back for a second round, and the streaming platform has also lumped its romance dramas into a Sweet On schedule, which is set to begin this month. Which dramas are you looking forward to most?

First up is Luoyang, and the trailer is giving me huge The Longest Day in Chang’an vibes. Huang Xuan‘s character seems pretty similar to Lei Jiayin’s, in that they’re both former government officials who are tasked with solving intriguing mysteries.

Li Yifeng, Song Yi cast in upcoming crime thriller Daybreaker

Daybreaker 暗夜行者 stars Li Yifeng as Chen Mo, a former undercover agent who fakes his death after finding out someone was trying to kill him. He takes on a brand new identity, and returns to the drug cartel to find out the truth. Costars include Song Yi and Stephen Fung.

Most of iQiyi’s Light On series have been pretty solid, so I’m hoping the trend continues this year. The 24 episode drama is directed by Cheng Hao (Ping Pong) and began filming today.

Promo Round-up: The Long Night

The literal translation is The Silent Truth.

It’s here! The much anticipated The Long Night stars Bai Yu as an upright prosecutor who is found dead in a suitcase. Liao Fan and Tan Zhuo costar. [Character descriptions]

iQiyi’s mystery thrillers have all been messed up by censors to some degree (apparently Sisyphus went back and forth between the editing room and SARFT 8 times), so I’m trying to keep my expectations low for this one.

The 12 episode drama will be English-subbed on the iQiyi app.

Xiao Yang, Zhao Liying, Dong Zijian cast in upcoming crime thriller

iQiyi crime thriller Who Is Murderer 谁是凶手 comes from director Sun Hao (Joy of Life, Bad Guys Must Die) and stars Xiao Yang and Dong Zijian as police officers and Zhao Liying as a doctor. Initial sources reported the drama as an adaption of the Baiyin Murders. The original synopsis is translated below:

In 2006, rookie police officer Leng Xiaobing (Xiao Yang) comes face to face with the serial killer responsible for the rape-murders of eight women. However, he is unable to fire, and the killer disappears from sight. Ten years later, police academy graduate Xia Mu (Dong Zijian) joins the local detective team. Unbeknowst to most, Xia Mu is the sole witness of the last murder, and suddenly, all the clues begin to converge.

Crime thriller The Bad Kids releases Wong Kar-wai-style stills

The drama was filmed in the seaside city of Zhanjiang.

It’s not even halfway through 2020 but I’m 95% certain I’ve already found my favourite drama of the year. The Bad Kids is directed by Xin Shuang, and revolves around three kids who blackmail a murderer (Qin Hao).

Promo Round-up: The Bad Kids

Previously translated as The Hidden Corner / Cat’s Cradle, The Bad Kids takes over the mystery thriller baton from Kidnapping Game, and stars Qin Hao as a long-suffering son-in-law whose crimes are caught on camera by three kids.
