The production values for Luoyang look great, and the hero, played by Huang Xuan, is the loyal officer who must prove his innocence while also helping to save the city from attack. Wang Yibo and Song Qian round out our trio of investigators.
The drama will begin streaming on iQiyi on December 1st.

Continue readingThe Magnolia Awards are here, and it’s another year of wishing that my favourite shows, or at least recipients deserving of the accolades, take home the awards. It’s always a delicate balancing act when it comes to giving out the awards, but I’m happy to report that there were no major surprises tonight (apart from the fact that Liu Lin didn’t win…again). Best Actress was the closest race this year, and Tong Yao edged out Reyizha to take home the award.
Judges include director Liu Jin (White Deer Plain), director Fu Dongyu (The Thunder), Tao Hong (A Little Reunion), Tong Dawei (A Love For Dilemma) and screenwriter Zhang Lei (Chinese Style Relationship).

The successful Light On programme is back for a second round, and the streaming platform has also lumped its romance dramas into a Sweet On schedule, which is set to begin this month. Which dramas are you looking forward to most?
First up is Luoyang, and the trailer is giving me huge The Longest Day in Chang’an vibes. Huang Xuan‘s character seems pretty similar to Lei Jiayin’s, in that they’re both former government officials who are tasked with solving intriguing mysteries.
Minning Town 山海情 is the first of a slew of government-endorsed dramas celebrating 100 years of the Chinese Communist Party. Starring Huang Xuan and Reyizha, the drama will focus on the resettlement of entire village communities from poorer areas to more developed lands.
Directed by Kong Sheng and Sun Molong and written by Wang Sanmao (If There Is No Tomorrow), the 24 episode drama is slated to air soon.

Based on Ma Boyong’s unpublished novel of the same name, Luoyang 风起洛阳 is being pitched as a Tang dynasty version of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The crime-solving trio consists of a police detective turned suspect (Huang Xuan), a lad who wants to find out the truth behind his father’s death (Wang Yibo) and a noble lady who wants to find the whistle blower’s letter (Song Qian).
Directed by Xie Ze (Great Expectations) and written by Qingmei (The Chronicles of Town Called Jian), the 40 episode drama began filming today.
Sniper stars Huang Xuan and Chen He as a pair of assassins who part ways due to differing views and loyalties. The 60 episode drama airs daily on Zhejiang TV / Dragon TV beginning Oct 9th.
