The Assassin prepares for release

Period picture collage done right

The Assassin, directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien and starring Shu Qi, Chang Chen, Ethan Ruan, and Satoshi Tsumabuki, keeps releasing pretty pictures and I’ve been dying for it to be released.  For once, I’m glad that there’s a production that can still focus on natural elements as opposed too much CGI, man-made elements like architecture, clothing styles, huge hair, etc.  With August 27th just around the corner, I thought we should celebrate with stills… and the short film they made introducing the general story.

The Assassin releases stills

Just what we need.  Another English title that has the word “assassin.”

It seems like forever since Taiwan has made a period martial arts flick that has caught my attention.  The Assassin is a Taiwan-mainland co-production directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien and starring Shu Qi, Chang Chen, Ethan Ruan, and Satoshi Tsumabuki.  The film is set in the Tang dynasty and bagged Best Director and the Soundtrack Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.  Sneak peak clip of the film here.

Finally, a photo of Zhou Dongyu where she doesn’t look twelve.

Combining modern humor with the feel of a traditional noir film,  detective film Shanghai Noir 暴走神探 released an unconventionally clever trailer as it tries to ride the wave of interest in its supporting actor Yang Yang.

Watch the trailer of the Clara Law film starring Ethan Ruan, Yang Zishan, Zhou Dongyu, and Yang Yang below.

Li Yuchun and Huang Xiaoming for The Guillotines

Li Yuchun, freshly “scarred” to match the bloodshed of The Guillotines.

Given the title, it’s not surprising that upcoming movie The Guillotines contains some violence. Featuring Ethan Ruan, Huang Xiaoming, Shawn Yue, Li Yuchun, and Jing Boran, and directed by Andrew Lau, this movie takes its root from a legend of a bloody murder weapon, the decapitating “blood droplet(s).” (A sword, not a pouch of hemoglobin.) If you’re interested in watching two assassin groups bicker with each other over the legendary weapon, be sure to watch out for this film. In addition, Li Yuchun sang the theme song for this film (Cold Blade), the MV for which can be found below (you can check it out for scenes from the movie). Some of the half bald men should reveal that this will be set in the Qing dynasty. You can also look under the cut for stills from the movie.

Along with  the no-longer “buck-toothed” and never “ugly”  Yang Peiyi, Anson Hu sings the theme songs for Ethan Ruan’s movie New “Boy Jia Li.” Produced by SMG, New “Boy Jia Li” is a children’s movie based on the book of the same name.  When Ethan Ruan’s character, the class teacher, goes to work at a TV station, Jia Li’s seventh grade class is without a leader. The class also becomes involved in a conflict with the neighboring class. As the classes learns to get along, Jia Li grows up and Ethan Ruan finds a love of his own.

Popularity by the numbers

What’s the most fair way to count popularity?
Baidu, mainland’s biggest search engine, thinks it’s by search results.
On the 20th, Baidu held its 3rd annual Hunan TV-Baidu Search Awards at the Water Cube.
CFensi brings you some of the best performances and speeches from the H3O.

Vicki Zhao Wei – Most popular actress; upon viewing a video summary of her ten years as an actress:

My greatest reward is that I found the meaning to my life. I think living in this world, everyone has a purpose in their lives, be it the the feeling of parents to their child or a doctor to his patients. In these ten years, I found the value in my life. Although my purpose is not as amazing as that of a scientist, but I think my life was a worthwhile one.

Chen Kun – most popular male actor

Actually, I’m late to mature. I always thought that I should act in roles that I want to, like in Mei Lan Fang, but unfortuantely I missed it. I realized that in life, there are other roles we must act as. Thank you to everyone who has supported me to this day. Whether you’re a fan of my acting, singing, or you’re just someone who silently supports me, I hope you’ll continue to support me. I’ll do my best for you guys, because I learned to enjoy my profession now.
