Huang Xiaoming’s “Cruel Romance” to Air March 3

Is it really that romantic to lay your head on your significant other’s shoulder? At least Huang Xiaoming isn’t playing piano like Hawick Lau was whenever Tang Yan did that to him in Lady & Liar.

The Republican-era romantic drama Cruel Romance (锦绣缘华丽冒险), starring Huang Xiaoming and Chen Qiao’en, has finally gotten an air date. The series will be broadcast on Hunan TV starting March 3, after The Legend of Fragrance finishes its run.

Based on the novel The Fate of Jinxiu (锦绣缘), Cruel Romance has been highly anticipated by fans of Huang Xiaoming and Chen Qiao’en, who had a brief collaboration in the movie Breaking the Waves (激浪青春). The drama is helmed by Taiwanese director Lin Helong, who is mostly known for Taiwanese idol dramas like Devil Beside You, Wish to See You Again, and Love or Bread.

Cruel Romance recently released its opening theme song, simply titled “Fate” (缘), which is sung by Huang Xiaoming. I usually like his songs because he tends to get good songwriters, but he’s definitely straining his voice in this one. *sigh* The lyrics were penned by the drama’s producers, Huan Yue and Huang Bin (who is also Xiaoming’s manager).

Weibo Wednesday: February 19, 2014

Even though it’s been three weeks since our last round-up, there’s not much to report from the Weibo front. I guess all of our favorite celebs have been too busy having fun during the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival to waste time on Weibo… which is how the holidays should be spent, amirite?

Anyway, for those of you wondering whether or not you’re a famous Chinese celebrity, here’s an easy litmus test: turn on the TV during the Chinese New Year season and see if you see yourself on the screen. If yes, you’re probably famous, like Vicki Zhao Wei, whose Princess Returning Pearl (还珠格格) has been a Hunan TV staple since it originally aired in 1998. This is reportedly the 15th time the channel has rerun the series.

Huang Xiaoming and Chen Qiao’en Engage in a “Cruel Romance”

If you were Chen Qiao’en, would you pick Huang Xiaoming or Kimi Qiao?

We weren’t supposed to see Huang Xiaoming star in a drama after he did Dark Fragrance (暗香) in 2009, but then Summer’s Desire (泡沫之夏) came along, and then he got the chance to film The Patriot Yue Fei (精忠岳飞). Now he’s back to 1930s Shanghai with his currently filming drama, Cruel Romance (锦绣缘·华丽冒险), which also stars Taiwanese actress Joe Chen Qiao’en.

Based on a novel by Nian Yi, Cruel Romance is the risky love story of Zuo Zhen (Huang Xiaoming) and Rong Jinxiu (Chen Qiao’en). This will be their second collaboration after Xiaoming’s guest appearance in Breaking the Waves (激浪青春), which does not appear to have ever aired in theaters, and Xiaoming’s first drama after he won this year’s Best Actor at both the Golden Rooster Awards and the Huabiao Awards.

Cruel Romance will also feature appearances from Kimi Qiao Renliang, mainland actress Lv Jiarong (Schemes of a Beauty, Swordman), Hong Kong actor Gardner Tse (The Mad Phoenix), and mainland actor Qi Ji (The Last Tycoon). Check behind the cut for the drama’s first batch of stills.

Huang Xiaoming for L’Officiel Hommes, will star in new Shanghai drama

Huang Xiaoming’s latest drama will bring him back to 1930s Shanghai, the “Paris of the East.” He and Joe Chen will be starring in Cruel Romance 绣缘华丽冒险. Rumor has it that they will be hiring the costume design team of the Great Gatsby to take a hand in the clothing for this drama, to help shape that feel of old Shanghai. (Source).
