Confucius Dance Drama

No… I don’t drink coffee… but I do have to have a daily dose of period pretty or things do not go well…

Clips of the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater’s production of Confucius has been released.  My favorites so far include Cai Wei (the lyrics are based on an ancient poem) and Incense.. Watch the whole thing here (can’t complain too much but hoping for a better quality release later).

It seems they may still be touring so maybe you will be lucky enough to catch a performance if they visit your city.  On the whole, there’s dance, music, pretty costumes, and bits people versed in Chinese history and literature will enjoy.  Something for everybody.

By the way, we don’t do posts like this often.  What do you think?  Should we continue if the opportunity presents itself?

Upcoming Chinese Romance Movies of 2010

Sorry – the new site and forum is being fixed and worked out. We’ll make an announcement on this site when it is more  complete.

In the meantime, here’s a list of modern day romance movies to look forward to in 2010, because these films are covered less than the ancient/wuxia/martial arts films by English-language media and yet, China has completely nose-dived into this genre in the past year.  Cinema goers in China want the choice of  light-hearted entertainment from the cinema, and the Chinese film industry is rapidly accommodating that niche in the market.

Last year, there was only a small selection – this year there’s much much more. With China’s total box office up 44% in 2009, and 1.65 cinema screens added per day, with no signs of slowly down, this should only be one sign to look forward to of the growing diversification of China’s rapidly rising film industry.

“My Fair Gentleman” and Other Movie Trailers

Why is it that everyone’s mother loves Sun Honglei? The man’s not ancient and his charm transcends the generations. Despite his being typecast as a villain for much his career, it was the subtle humor that he seamlessly injected into those roles that made me a fan. It remains to be seen if he can do it  for a full movie, such as with the upcoming romantic comedy, My Fair Gentleman (Previously called Dirt Rich in Shanghai). It has a Pygmalion-like plot where he plays the Eliza Doolittle to Kelly Lin‘s Higgins. I’ve grown to really like Kelly Lin and I think she’d play really well off of Sun Honglei, so I’ve been looking forward to this movie. However, the script really has to be much better than what’s been revealed in the trailer.

Film Productions Give Sneak Peaks At Cannes

Cannes isn’t just the oldest, most venerated film festival in the world; it’s also a prime opportunity for film companies everywhere to hawk their upcoming productions and look for potential buyers. Those lucky enough to be part of a film chosen for selection will be certainly be pulling-double duty and promoting them to distributors as well as jurors. Others like Zhao Wei and Chen Kun came especially to Cannes to promote for an unfinished movie, in their case Mulan, for which a sneak peak and teaser poster was revealed. Other Chinese films giving first looks included Little Big Soldier (the Jackie-Chan Leehom Collab), Sophie’s Revenge, Confucius, and Falling in Love With You in Seven Days. However, I have to wonder if trying to scramble to get something together in time for Cannes is that wise of a tactic- if I had any interest in these movies before, these posters may have killed it.
