Chen Xuedong plays Guo Jingming, falls for Zheng Shuang in Rush to the Dead Summer

Could Guo Jingming finally have a decent TV adaptation of his novels? The trailer so far seems lovely, and casting of Zheng Shuang, Chen Xuedong, Bai Jingting, Xia Ziting and Chai Biyun is perfect.

Rush to the Dead Summer follows the main lead Lu Xiaosi (Chen Xuedong). Xiaosi  is an introverted but talented illustrator who began publishing under a pseudonym in high school. He  finally made it big in college and started his own publishing company, only to be caught in accusations of plagiarism. As if afraid you can’t figure out that this story is about him, Guo Jingming made the main lead’s name (小司) literally being a homophone of his own pseudonym (小四).

This is the second time Chen Xuedong will play Guo Jingming, the last time being when he played Zhou Chongguang, an annoying writer who would never turn in his writings in time, in Tiny Times 1/2/3/4. We get it, guys, you guys are soulmates.

Being a Guo Jingming story, there are also a lot of love triangles. Xiaosi is joined by the extroverted and sunny bff who will literally die for him Lu Zhihang (Bai Jingting), the perfect(ly dull) female lead Lixia (Zheng Shuang) who he dates, the spunky Yujian (Xia Ziting) with dreams of being a rockstar and a love triangle of her own , and the vain Cheng Qiqi (Chai Biyun) who also likes Xiaosi.

To get an idea of the extent of communist infiltration at the time, the head of the KMT’s central intelligence agency was at one time a communist mole. The character whom Ming Lou was modeled after in The Disguiser? A five-sided agent.

Espionage dramas have long been turning points for many actors, most recently Jin Dong and Wang Kai in The Disguiser.   While usually more reserved for veteran actors, the specialty is now in vogue for the young and beautiful.   Set mostly during the Sino-Japanese war, a period is known for their classy outfits and intrigue-filled politics,  espionage dramas are perfect for multi-layered characters and acting if one can handle it.
