Even though the Magnolia Awards tend to favor actors/directors/dramas in the Shanghai circle, it is the awards show I enjoy watching most because the winners are usually worthy recipients. Feng Shaofeng plays the third emperor of the Ming dynasty in drama The Imperial Age 江山纪. He’s joined by Chen Baoguo as his father Zhu Yuanzhang, Ying’er as his empress, Chen Yuemo as his nephew, as well as Zhang Fengyi, Wang Jinsong, and Mickey He. Director Gao Xixi (New Three Kingdoms, The King’s War)’s recent works have been a combination of hits and misses, but at least the costumes look amazing.
Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has released its first trailer, and focuses on Weng Quanhai’s (Chen Baoguo) journey to revive TCM after the Kuomintang ban acupuncture and herbal medicine in 1929. Feng Yuanzheng stars as a genius western medicine doctor who is jealous of Weng Quanhai’s achievements and later frames him for medical malpractice.
After seeing trailers for this and Nirvana in Fire, I’m officially a fan of this team from Shandong TV Group, whose trailers are all film-qualitied. All Quiet in Peking 北平无战事 features a truly all-star (i.e. not just pretty, but amazing actors) of Liu Ye, Berlin Film Festival’s new best actor Fan Liao, Chen Baoguo, Wang Kai (who is also a lead in Nirvana in Fire). The drama is directed by Kong Sheng and produced by Hou Hongliang, the duo behind Nirvana in Fire and Chuang Guandong. The script is by Liu heping of Emperor Yongzheng 雍正王朝 and Ming Dynasty1566 大明王朝1566.
