A couple of TV/ stage performances that I’ve enjoyed lately, mostly from Youth With You and The Treasured Voice.

Review: The Devotion of Suspect X

Verdict: Director Alec Su’s second attempt is an improvement from his first and benefits from a much better story, stunning cinematography, but the screenplay is still choppy and leaves more to be desired.
The brilliant story of The Devotion of Suspect X is recaptured for the Chinese audience in director Alec Su’s second film. Aided by a much superior story, a better cast, and more fitting cinematography, Alec Su unfortunately is handicapped by his poor control of the film.
The suspense/detective tale with a twist features Zhang Luyi as Shi Hong, a genius and a loner who tries to help his neighbor Chen Jing (Ruby Lin) to cover up her murder of her ex-husband. Unfortunately for the pair, their crime caught the eye of Tang Chuan (Wang Kai), a physicist and Shi Hong’s best friend in high school. Tang Chuan is called upon to help detective Luo Miao (Ye Zuxin) to solve the murder, but along the way gets caught in the crime itself.
Devotion of Suspect X opens this weekend in U.S./Canada/U.K./Australia

You can usually tell who’s on the same side by the matching clothes.
The Devotion of Suspect X is one of three detective films airing this weekend, but viewers abroad will only have a chance to see one, so you should take it, if only so my local cinema will be motivated to air it next weekend.
The film stars Wang Kai, Zhang Luyi, Ruby Lin, and Ye Zuxin, and is directed by Alec Su. Screening information here

Zhao Wei sings for Alec Su’s new film
Zhao Wei sings the theme song for Alec Su‘s directorial debut The Left Ear starring Ou Hao, Chen Duling, Yang Yang, and Ma Sichun. The cast looks much better in character than expected.

The Left Ear splashed in color for character posters
Ou Hao, Yang Yang, Hu Xia, and Duan Bowen are dunked in colorful paint for the latest set of character posters for The Left Ear. The Alec Su film is set to air on April 1st this year, and still haven’t released photos of its female lead.
Alec Su directorial debut releases trailer
Once a youth icon himself, Alec Su revisits the popular themes of youths and high school once more in his directorial debut, The Left Ear 左耳. First glimpses of the mostly new male cast of Ou Hao, Yang Yang, Hu Xia, and Duan Bowen were released this week.
Fun fact: Jiang Jinfu and Lin Gengxin were the cover models for the book before going into acting. How do you think the new cast compare?
The Four 3 releases trailer

LIu Yifei’s character is called Heartless, by the way. You can add this image to your collection of ironic pictures.
The Four 3, the final installment to the film series, has released a trailer as well as announced its release date on August 22. Starring Deng Chao (Cold Blooded), Liu Yifei Heartless), Collin Chou (the hot-blooded “Iron Hand”), Ronald Cheng (whose role Life Snatcher was previously held by “hotties” like Wallace Chung and Peter Ho), Anthony Wong, Jiang Yiyan, Alec Su, Wu Yingjie and Bao Bei’er, this film picks up from the abrupt and tragic end of the previous. Presumably, it will bring to a close all the untied ends from the last two films with flurry of CGI.
