Liu Yifei's Mulan promos have begun!

Liu Yifei’s Mulan promotions have begun! Here’s the first of undoubtedly many photoshoots. With a theme of duality that also mirrors the ballad of Hua Mulan, this photoshoot is by Liu Zongyuan of the Mulan-like photoshoot. Supposedly each picture is a line of the poem, so below the cut is my attempt at matching sections of the ballad with the pictures.

A Visual Guide to What I Hate About Mulan’s Aesthetics

I’ll still watch the movie for the nostalgia and Liu Yifei/Gong Li, but I just don’t understand why some of the visual choices are so hideous in Disney’s Mulan.

You would think the biggest film company in the world with such a big budget would be able to build on years of development in the Chinese entertainment industry, yet it’s uglier than TV series made decades ago. How do they get a German costume designer, a New Zealand production designer and make-up artist, an Australian cinematographer, a British stunt coordinator, but not a single person who’s worked on a few Chinese movies or dramas in the past decade to be in the production crew?

Here’s a scene-by-scene comparison of one of the most expensive films ever by the biggest film company in the world versus Chinese TV series.

Bai Baihe, Zhang Zifeng welcome the new year in Begin, Again

Begin, Again 亲爱的新年好 stars Bai Baihe (Go Away, Mr. Tumor!, A City Called Macau) as the heroine who begins to find herself and start a new life with the help of young room-mate (Zhang Zifeng) and colleague-turned-love interest (Wei Daxun).

Li Hongqi, Li Yitong’s fantasy romance film releases teaser

The title literally means “I’m waiting for you at the end of time.”

Love You Forever 我在时间尽头等你 stars Li Hongqi (Go Go Squid!) as Lin Ge, a man who turns back time so his love interest Qiu Qian can be resurrected. However there’s always a price to pay for thwarting Fate, and the teaser suggests that in the new timeline, Lin Ge will no longer be able to exist in the heroine’s life.

Directed by Yao Tingting (Yesterday Once More), the film is scheduled for a Valentine’s Day premiere next year.

Chen Kaige directs original Peking Opera-themed short

Farewell, My Concubine takes center stage once more in a Chen Kaige film as a group of young actors face difficult choices before a scheduled performance of the classic piece.

Director Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine, Forever Enthralled) returns to the Peking Opera troupe for inspirations in this stylized short film directed and written by him for variety show Attention Actors 演员请就位. Zhao Wenhao (Sacrifice) puts on imo the best performance of the show as a disgruntled former actor who fulfills his dream of acting as the hero Xiang Yu on stage by channeling him in real life to protect his beloved. The film co-stars Huang Yao (The Crossing) and Yu Xiaotong (Dream of the Red Chambers).
