The Twelfth Second 第十二秒 stars Ren Zhong (Nothing Gold Can Stay) as a detective who goes on a desperate search for his missing wife Hu Jiaying, played by Wan Qian (New World). He also comes face to face with his wife’s twin sister Xu Lian (Wan Qian), who seems to be working for an organised crime syndicate.
Plot summary below:
“Had I not seen the Sun
I could have borne the shade
But Light a newer Wilderness
My Wilderness has made.”—— Emily Dickinson
Hu Jiaying was six months pregnant when she vanished. The only clue is an emergency phone call that abruptly ended on the eleventh second: “I’m looking for my husband. His name is Zhao Yichen, and he’s a detective in the crime investigations unit. Can you please tell him…”
Nine years later, Zhao Yichen receives two photos of his wife, which leads him to a stranger’s house. While there, he finds out his wife had passed away a year ago, and has left behind a hefty sum and a young daughter suffering from PTSD.
Sunness’ novel touches on themes such as drug trafficking, child abuse and corruption, though from the spoiler-laden summary submitted to the censor board, it seems like the producers will put more focus on the undercover subplot.
Directed by Pan Jingcheng (Face Off), the 32 episode drama airs Mondays and Tuesdays in Hunan TV’s 10pm time slot.
