Flashback: Chinese Paladin

It’s been exactly 15 years since Chinese Paladin first aired, and the series has remained my favourite xianxia drama ever since.

A flashback series of photos of Chinese Paladin 仙剑奇侠传 featuring Hu Ge, Liu Yifei, Ady An, Esther Liu, Bryan Wong, Eddie Peng and Tse Kwanho among others. Unlike many of the recent xianxia / 仙侠 dramas that focus solely on the romance or fantasy aspect and forgo the equally important code of chilvalry (侠), this one had equal parts romance, adventure and friendship.

Ah Sang’s Always Very Quiet, my favourite song from the soundtrack.

All the supporting characters’ story arcs made a lasting impression on me, whether it was the butterfly fairy’s love for Liu Jinyuan, Jiang Ming and the fox demon’s ill-fated love story or the Drunken Sword Immortal and Ah-nu’s bittersweet father-daughter relationship.

Most of the instrumentals Mai Zhenhong  composed for Tangren’s early dramas are classics, and in my opinion, Peach Blossom Island and Everlasting Memory are the clear standouts from Chinese Paladin‘s soundtrack.

Then 21-year-old Hu Ge as Li Xiaoyao.
Liu Yifei was only 16 years old when she filmed Chinese Paladin.
Ady An as the feisty young lady of the Lin Manor
Bryan Wong as Liu Jinyuan, the scholar with a heart of gold.
Sun Li as the descendant of Nvwa, whose love for her people overrode all personal desires
Tse Kwanho as Drunken Sword Immortal
Esther Liu as Ah-nu
Eddie Peng as Tang Yu (Xiaobao)
Elvis Tsui as Head of the Moon Worship Cult, a man ahead of his times with regards to the spherical Earth concept.
Jiang Xin as the fox demon. After Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils and this drama, I knew she was an actress I needed to follow.

  2. It’s so nice to see posts mentioning old dramas like these! I’d definitely say that this older drama is much better than most of the current xianxia dramas. I wasn’t that much of a fan of chinese paladin 5 sadly and thought 3 was okay and was more interested in liu shi shis role in that one.
