Live-action meets animated series Dramaholic is also a Peking Opera rap musical and a sci-fi

Dramaholic combines 2D backgrounds, 3D animation, live-action, a 2D world, our world, an Internet world, Peking opera,  rap, rock, and martial arts.

Not only does Dramahoic combine Peking opera animation with live-action humor, it turns out that it is also a Peking opera and rap musical and has a cyber dimension.

When an animated Peking Opera character goes through mid-show identity crisis, he escapes to the live-action human world.  The rest of the opera troupe, each one representing a type of Peking opera character,  must now enter our world to bring him back. They take a “dimension increase” pill and enter our world. In our world, they must avoid cameras since they turn into animation whenever they’re photographed.  Once a day, they can also go into stage mode to fight.  Based on the trailer, at some point they also all enter the Internet.

Dramaholic 戏隐江湖 airs two episodes on iQiyi here  every Wednesday and Thursay  starting on the 12th behind Never Ever Expected  (万万没想到).

I’ve seen the first two episodes and the music is actually pretty good. The songs so far are one Peking Opera + rap mix, one Peking opera, and one xiaoqu (?).

Here’s the new trailer:

  1. Great artwork! also relieved that these animated characters don’t have saucer-sized eyes and westernized features.
