White Deer Plain was nominated in every single category, and took home three awards. He Bing took home the top acting award for his performance in The Love of Courtyard, though he was equally impressive in White Deer Plain (I really need to pick this show up again).
There were no major controversies tonight, as everyone knew Yu Hewei would take home Best Supporting Actor – his Cao Cao is fabulous, and has pretty much taken the top spot in my list of favourite onscreen characters. In the backstage interview, Yu Hewei said he treated Cao Cao as a human, and not just a villain/anti-hero of the Three Kingdoms.
Congratulations are also in for The First Half of My Life, as cast members Ma Yili and Xu Di won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress while Qin Wen took home an award for the script (possibly the biggest surprise of the evening). Personally, I thought the female lead paled in comparison to the headstrong and capable Tang Jing (Yuan Quan), but the snobby mother-in-law Xue Zhenzhu was a definite highlight, and much of the credit goes to Xu Di for making her more grounded and likeable.
Even though Tribes and Empires faced stiff competition, I was surprised it didn’t pick up anything in the art department, because when all else failed, at least the drama was still pretty to look at.

It’s time meaty roles and recognition is given to veteran actors and actresses over 40. But given the dominance of young fans who prefer idol type actors, that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
Can’t believe Tribes didn’t won Best Cinematography…Why??
I agree. I don’t get to see Yuan Quan in dramas much but I first noticed her in the Last Tycoon. Her final scene was very memorable in that film. I always find her acting a lot more captivating than the madly popular Dilraba, Chen Qiao en, Liu Shishi, Tang Yan, Yang Mi crowd. And it’s even more impressive that YQ’s formal training is in dance. YQ handles intense scenes well. Qin Hailu, Liu Mintao, (sometimes) Chen Shu and others are also enjoyable to watch but they don’t flood the drama scenes like the Dilraba group. I’m so happy you write about some of the “veteran” actors and actresses. It can sad sometimes how the more seasoned actresses often get the supporting roles and often in smaller-budget productions.
