Fun fact: The title of the drama is taken from one of Tsangyang Gyatso‘s romantic poems.
The upcoming webdrama Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You 不负如来不负卿 is based on Xiaochun’s’ time travel romance novel of the same name, and tells of the love story between a monk (Niu Zifan) and a historian (Rong Zhuo) who time travels back and forth between 4th century China and the year 2317.
Ai Qing successfully time travels back to the past on her third attempt, and arrives in the Sixteen Kingdoms, a chaotic era where northern China came under the rule of several short-lived sovereign states founded by ethnic groups. She befriends teenage Buddhist monk Luo Chi, and the two often spend time together exchanging knowledge about each other’s language and culture. They fall in love, and are determined to be togeether despite the prevailing norms of society. An incomplete English translation of the novel can be found here.
Helmed by Li Yunliang (Love in Nanking), the drama will release 2 episodes every Thursday and Friday on Tencent beginning December 20th.
I’m finishing this up on YTube – it doesn’t seem to end how the novel does. In fact, it seems suspiciously like there might be a second season. Any news about this?
I’ll keep my expectation very, very low.
This was my favorite time traveling romance novel. The trailer doesn’t look too promising , but keeping my fingers crossed.
