A series for some of my favorite up-and-rising young artists. Most of them aren’t big enough to have fancy photo shoots, but they’re cute. Feel free to leave a comment if you want some featured.
Zheng Yecheng 郑业成 (born in 1993) was definitely the highlight of O2O for me. His sheepish smile is contagious, and their side-plot is probably one of my favorite side-romances in a while.
Since then, he’s starred in a number of quirky romances, including my favorite rom-com so far this year, Let’s Shake It. He’s not a phenomenal actor, but his youthful cuteness is enough for him to pull off most of his roles so far. Plus, his martial arts training could give him a leg up for wuxia roles.
He’s currently filming Fantastical Nights in the Tang Dynasty 盛唐幻夜, an ancient series with Wu Qian.(more…)
Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace is a 90 episode epic that will chronicle the failed marriage of Ruyi (Zhou Xun) and the Qianlong Emperor (Wallace Huo), and has just released grand posters of its cast in formal court robes (chaofu / 朝服), which is worn strictly during state ceremonies and important festivals. The historical romance drama is tentatively scheduled for a New Year premiere.
Tang Yixin (The Advisors Alliance) plays Dong’ge, the most beautiful woman in the Jurchen tribes who gets involved in a love triangle with Nurhaci and his sons. She’ll fall in love with Daishan, played by Zhang Rui, and then his younger brother Huang Taiji (who was actually still a kid at this point in the original novel), played by Raymond Lam, and also gets caught up in a dangerous game of politics.

The Longest Day in Chang’an 长安十二时辰 is an upcoming Youku web drama based on Ma Boyong’s novel of the same name, and stars Jackson Yi Yangqianxi (Boyhood) and Lei Jiayin (Brotherhood of Blades II) as leads.
Tang Wei is the latest film actress to make a return to dramas, and will be playing the female lead in Empress of the Ming: Legend of Sun Ruowei 大明皇妃孙若薇传, a historical romance drama that will chronicle the heroine’s journey from a young girl to a respected empress dowager.
This is the fastest release of a teaser I have ever seen, and it actually looks really good. Daylight Ent deserves brownie points for using on-site recording (I’m hoping it stays in the final product, since most of the line reading is excellent) and a muted colour palette.
Oh My General is the latest drama from Lv Haojiji (Go Princess Go!), and stars Ma Sichun (Soul Mate) as a badass female general of the Song dynasty, who is ordered to marry an immature and frivolous prince, played by Sheng Yilun (Pretty Li Huizhen).
This is Ma Sichun’s first project since her win at the Golden Horse Awards, so I’ll be curious to see if she can still bring out her best without the guidance of an experienced director like Peter Chan. The 60 episode drama will air weekly on Youku beginning tonight.
