23rd Magnolia Awards

The turnout rate for the actors was pretty embarrassing this year – Zhang Yi was the only Best Actor nominee who attended the event, and ended up winning the award as well. His costar Yin Tao also took home Best Actress, though I’ve read great reviews about their performances in Feather Flies to the Sky, so there was no controversy surrounding the wins.

The same can’t be said for child-actress-turned-lead Guan Xiaotong, who beat popular nominee Hu Jing to take home Best Supporting Actress. Netizens are calling foul play, though I do think Guan Xiaotong deserved the award – she’s a solid actress for her age, and really brought the teenage rebel daughter character to life in To Be A Better Man.

Ode to Joy received the most nominations, so it must have been disappointing for them to not even receive one award. However, if you take away the popularity factor, Ode to Joy isn’t a particularly strong candidate in any of the scripting, directing and acting departments, so I wasn’t surprised by the result. What I was surprised about was producer Hou Hongliang’s announcement that Season 3 is in the works – seriously, what more is there to tell?

  1. Guan’s acting is the weakest of the five nominated. She shouldn’t get an age bonus, especially when she actually has the worst line reading of the somewhat known actors her age (Liu Haoren, Zhang Zifeng, Wu Lei, Zhang Xueying, Jiang Yiyi, Xu Yijia, potentially even Hou Minghao). The only ones I can think of off the top of my head who has less clear lines are TF Boys.

She has one of the worst accents for someone from one of the Big Three (Gao Weiguang still reigns as no. 1) . I really can’t take her seriously when every one of her character clearly sounds like she’s never left Beijing in her life.
