Tale of Two Phoenixes releases trailer, gains new title

Yu Zheng‘s romance historical drama has a new English title in Untouchable Lovers 凤囚凰 and recently released its first stills and a preview. Rising young actress Guan Xiaotong (Castle in the Sky) replaced Yang Rong as female lead Liu Chuyu / Zhu Que, and Song Weilong (Long For You) took over the role of Rong Zhi from Merxat.

Tianji Tower, the leading organisation of the pugilistic world (jianghu) is determined to overthrow the tyrannical ruler Liu Ziye. To achieve their mission, Tianji Tower replaces his sister Liu Chuyu with their own disciple and Princess-lookalike Zhu Que. Zhu Que meets the Princess’ learned companion Rong Zhi, who turns out to be a spy from Northern Wei.

Liu Chuyu and Rong Zhi’s relationship eventually breaks down over misunderstandings and differing loyalties, and the latter fakes his death in order to regain Chuyu’s forgiveness. Somehow they accidentally lose their memories, and only meet five years later when Chuyu is sent to marry Northern Wei’s Prince regent, who is none other than the now amnesiac Rong Zhi.

This drama is anything but a faithful adaption of Tianyi Youfeng’s original, though I’m glad Yu Zheng has at least left his bright rainbow colours behind. The 40 episode drama is produced and written by Yu Zheng and directed by Li Huizhu (Above the Clouds).

    • There is a huge demand for IPs at the moment. :p Producers are willing to buy IPs because the name alone brings a stable fanbase that will generate returns for the show regardless of how faithful the adaptions are.

  2. That is the least comfortable palace I’ve seen for a while. As are the hair styles. With the inevitable wait for English subtitles, I’ll have a while to figure out if it is worth watching. Thanks for the photos, though!

  3. I’m still upset that they had to replace Yang Rong. YR could really fit the image as Liu Chuyu. But then again… Yumama… can’t really expect so much from him, do we? I’m not going to say anything about the hairstyle. It. Is. Absolutely. Horrible. Why do you do this, stylists? I might watch this, just to know the ending, perhaps? It could be better than I expected.
