Happy Mid-Autumn Festival, everyone!

Sung in time for the Mid-Autumn Moon festival, so a tearjerker in itself for those of us away from our families,  Jikejunyi ‘s new song,  “When the moon reaches the heart of the sky 月到天心处,” also touches the heart in its references to the tales told in Bodyguards and Assassins, for whose drama version starring Wallace Chung the song is the theme for.  The title is reference to a Song-sydnasty poem by Shao Yong and refers to the most serene and thoughtful moment of the  night.

Singer: Summer Jikejunyi
Composer: Fingazz
Lyrics: Yao Qian

Reach the edge of the earth to pick a rose
Once in my youth, I thought
the most beautiful world should be
in a distant land
How many pains and struggles,
only to climb beyond the mountains and cross the seas,
thinking that another land could be my homeland
but I forgot, that calling in my heart,
when the moon reaches the heart of the sky, when the wind blows across the water surface

I pretend that it’s the same moon
from the mountain top, moved to the balconies of skyscrapers
Still round at times, crescent at others
but  different emotions
reflect on the rose in my palm

climb beyond the mountains and cross the seas,
thinking that another land could be my homeland
but I forgot, that calling in my heart,

When the moon reaches the heart of the sky, when the soft wind blows against the water surface

The rose of a distant land fill my bosom
I’m still that child
Even if I stand at the top of the world,
I only look in that direction
Beyond the mountains, across the seas
how can another land be my homeland,
how can I forget, the calling in my heart,
when the moon reaches the heart of the sky, when the soft wind blows against the water surface

how can another land be my home

The lyrics reminded me so much of Li Yuchun’s character, Fang Hong. Her father, a former general whose troops disguised themselves as an opera troupe, is on the run from the Qing government while fighting against it. In one instance, she asks her father, “Why must we keep running? When can we go home to Tianjin?” Her father responds, “We must leave home to return to it.”  Sometimes we must all leave our homes so that we can one day return, and hopefully find that both we and our homes have improved in the process.

  1. Beautiful. The singer, lyricist, and composer really came together to make such a wonderful song. I wish all the more success to them!
