Action movie star Jet Li and online retail tycoon, Jack Ma, have joined forces to found a martial arts school. The new academy was unveiled in Hangzhou, hometown of Ma, who stepped down as CEO of Alibaba Group last week to focus on education and the environment.
Li and Ma’s jointly owned enterprise, Taiji Zen, developed the martial arts program alongside the National Martial Arts Research Institute. Taiji Zen was established two years ago and provides tai chi training to corporate employees, but this is the company’s first training centre open to the public.
The school aims to promote tai chi in China and overseas, with Li making comparisons to the international clout of karate and taekwondo. Taiji Zen also offers courses in pushing hands 推手 and weapons training.
Courses are now available in Hangzhou and online courses will commence in August.
Taiji Zen is also offering a summer internship program to native English speakers, with openings in digital marketing and martial arts program development.
