Upcoming production The King of Lanling stars Feng Shaofeng as the eponymous character, supported by Ariel Lin as his eventual wife and Daniel Chan as his romantic rival. The historical King of Lanling, Gao Changmu, lived in the sixth century during the Northern and Southern dynasties. He was renowned for his prowess in battle, as a great general. He is also the source of the English title of he drama – as “the masked beauty” who had to hide his gorgeous face in battle with a fearsome mask, so that his enemies would take him seriously. Don’t be too optimistic about his ending, though – he was born to a noble family, that went through a total of six emperors within twenty-eight years. The distrust between the various brothers (and uncles and nephews) would lead to numerous murders – the King of Lanling, naturally, attracted jealousy as well. I still think Feng Shaofeng’s face is too manly for the King of Lanling’s beauty, but Ariel Lin has settled into the drama quite nicely.
The trailer can be seen here, and still from the series can be seen below the cut.
when will it air?
The stills look a lot better than the trailer. Especially after taking on Xiang Yu quite successfully, I don’t think anyone needs a mask to fear Feng Shaofeng. Despite the awkward cast, I hope they succeed enough to inspire others to tackle the story. Lanling Wang’s mess of a family = potential fodder for great movies and dramas
Wishful thinking on my part, but I wish they would case a girl as Lanling Wang. Not as in “he’s secretly a girl,” but just so it really seems like he’s too pretty to be feared? I’m sure there’s some actress who could pull of the acting…but of course, that would cause complications TT_____TT
The most popular fanfic/internet novel on Lanling Wang actually has him as a girl. XD I think casting a really pretty female would be a great choice, even if they chose to make him actually male. If only the Internet weren’t so harsh and will prance on anything unconventionally, it would work really well. It’ll be interesting if this airs the same time as 女相 (speaking of which, I wonder who plays Lanling Wang in that?)
