Film Composer San Bao Comes Back After Two Years to the Stage

This is perhaps an article where few others would care, but I couldn’t let this pass under the radar. Composer San Bao two years ago fell seriously ill. Since then, he’s been inactive, regaining his health, but it’s been announced that he was planning on making a return to the art scene, by staging a symphonic concert at Henan. San Bao is known for scoring Zhang Yimou’s Not One Less and The Road Home as well as several theme songs, including Jin Fen Shi Jia‘s An Xiang.

Some San Bao: Music from the Road Home (in the form of a ZZY montage bc it was the only thing I found on youtube – sorry!)

I always thought it was such a shame that he had health problems right at the cusp of China’s film boom. Because tv and film composers develop later than the film industry, China’s in a desperate  need for composers. He says he will concentrate on musical theater now, and does not plan to write for tv or film anymore, but I hope he reconsiders . Overall, I’m just excited he’s back.

  1. Wow, this piece is absolutely gorgeous. I love this one comment someone left on the YouTube video: “God himself must have composed this Song!”

  2. Btw has anyone seen the series 小姨多鹤 yet?
SunLi’s acting is amazing :O Usually I don’t like watching series that’s set during this time, but the storyline is nothing too complex. I’m still on episode 21.

  3. According to the article he did these: 《牵手》、《金粉世家》、《不见不散》. He’s probably done more, but I can’t find them. -_-

It’s sort of hard to find information on Chinese composers. They’re credited in films, and I go look them up and I can’t find anything.

I loved whoever did the work for Zhang Yimou’s film Huo Zhe too + some of his other older movies. He needs to release a compilation of the scores from all his movies, because he brought in some really brilliant Chinese composers and I don’t know how to find their music. :(

  4. Wow this sounds gorgeous!!!! Do you know what other songs he has composed? Like theme songs and stuff?? I can’t find anything on him at all. >.< I loved An Xiang too <333

  5. It makes you cry because the score was so beautiful. Oh, and probably because Zhang Yimou is amazing at making foliage look beautiful. I think I need to go replace the top picture of San Bao with so still from the movie just to kinda convey that. *Sigh* Why did the youtuber have to upload a montage of her at red carpet events?

And yes, you should tone down the gray dimension obsession before I stone you.

  6. I loved this film. It makes me cry everytime I watch it.

Am I going to get stoned if I say this score reminds me of gray dimension in terms of mood (especially the female vocalization part)?

  7. Oh…it’s one of my favorite Chinese OST scores. Much more so than even Shigeru Umbeyashi’s for Zhang Yimou’s later work. And so much better than Tan Dun.

  8. I was while I was reading all the new posts. But I didn’t really having anything interesting to say so…

It sounds like it should be playing during a scene where the lead matures and it’ll be showing mountains and nature and such… at least that’s what I see when I listen to this.
